Appearance

Bottle – Dark opaque bottle with an off-white label and black and red font with a gold logo on the top right.

Wine – Garnet with small bits of light that can go through. Pretty dense in appearance causing a slightly cloudy appearance.  The rim variation changes to a ruby color.

Aroma/Nose

Red berries such as black cherries, over ripe red fruits, spice, oak are the dominant aromas that hit your nose hard.  A faint licorice scent is also identifiable. Definitely tested the senses a bit.

Texture/Body

Dry and heavy on the palate. This wine hits the front of the tongue and works its way back. This is a full-bodied red wine.

Tasting/Palate

Not as lively on the palate as the nose. I immediately picked up oak on the back of my tongue, dark, dried red berries that became lighter and more ripe as the wine had more time to breathe.  There is definitely a licorice and pepper under bite to this wine.

Finish

The finish is short and consisted of leather and licorice.  I

Overall Experience

This was an incredibly interesting rich wine. We aged this bottle for about 5 years since Stephanie’s trip to Madrid.  The oak flavor was difficult to distinguish because they used both French and American oak so the real toasted flavor was not present. We both really enjoyed this wine!

Winemakers Tasting Notes

Julián Civite 2010 Unzu Crianza Rioja ($15) 90+ The personal project and creation of entrepreneur Juliá Chivte López. This modern wine offers high-toned red fruit aromas and a sweet character, with baked cherry, toasty oak and caramel notes. A delicious highly drinkable wine and good value.
