Onyx Reserve – Cigar Review

Onyx Reserve

This is a cigar review of the Onyx Reserve by Altadis Cigars. The size chosen for this review is the toro. This cigar is made up of a blackened Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper followed by Dominican, Nicaraguan and Peruvian tobaccos. This is a nice medium bodied budget stick that prices in around $5.50 for a single and $82.50 for a box of 20!

Construction/Appearance:

This Onyx Reserve has a near black wrapper that has some subtle hues of dark chocolate mixed in. There are a few thicker stitch-like veins and seams are invisible in the wrapper’s darkness.

Pre-Light:

Aromas of chocolate nuances gleam from the wrapper through the nasal passages on the pre-light sniff test. We used the Palio straight cut on this cigar. The cold draw produces Fig Newton like notes, which were phenomenal. This gave us high hopes for this budget smoke.

After Toast:

First third – Dark fruits and buttery spices really take over the palate initially upon toast. Some smoked woodsy type notes begin to show themselves a few minutes into this stick. The body is medium, burn is sharp and ash falls at the inch mark of the cigar.

Second Third – The dark fruits, espresso, buttery spices and wood like notes carry here. The body is medium and burn remains sharp.

Final Third – The dark fruits , smoky wood and spice really pick up heavier in this third on the palate. Some meaty notes show themselves on the very end of the third. The body turns fuller and burn remains sharp through the end.

Suggested Pairing:

Wine – Cabernet

Scotch – Johnnie Walker Black

Bourbon – Rabbit Hole

Overall Experience:

The Onyx Reserve packs a hell of a punch for an inexpensive smoke. The fruits and butters with woods and espressos dazzles the palate throughout the entire experience. As if that wasn’t enough the meaty notes that finish it off leave you longing for more, which is always a great feeling when you just invested an hour and half into the experience. I do think this is a fine find if you see them in your local store that won’t disappoint.
