Gilberto Oliva Reserva Noir
This is a cigar review of the Gilberto Oliva Reserva Noir by Oliva Cigars. The size chosen for this review is the robusto. The composition of this cigar consists of a Honduran Jamastran wrapper followed by Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers. This is a full bodied smoke that retails for around $6.00. You can get lucky and catch these on blowout deals along with some of their counterparts in the Gilberto Oliva line at Cigars International frequently.
This Gilberto Oliva Reserva Noir has a rich earthy brown looking wrapper with some nice orangish marbling. There are many fine veins running up and down the smoke and the seams are barely visible.
Aromas of chocolate, cedar and raisin are present upon the pre-light sniff ritual. We cut this with a straight cut. The cold draw produces exactly what we caught on the nose with cedar, raisin and a subtle undertone of chocolate.
First third – The dark chocolate notes followed by a cedar undertone really start this off nicely. A really nice sweet spice note comes into play just before the end of this third. The body is full, burn slightly wavy and ash holds through the third.
Second Third – The notes of dark chocolate, cedar, wood and spice all carry over here with some nutty notes added to the finish. Similar to that Nutella spread we all love and crave so much minus all the calories! The body remains full and burn is sharp. The ash falls at the halfway point of the cigar.
Final Third – The nice dark chocolate, cedar, spice and nutty notes carry into this third beautifully. The body remains full and burn is slightly wavy.
Scotch – Johnny Walker Double Black
Wine – Caymus Zinfandel
For the price point this Gilberto Oliva Reserva Noir delivers a really nice full bodied smoke experience that is surely worth the $6.00. While not all that complex as the same notes circulate through the palate during the entire experience, it is a nice consistent flavor profile that is perfect for anyone trying to learn how to decipher a fuller bodied smoke.
