Cuevas Reserva Natural
This Cuevas Reserva Natural is made by Casa Cuevas Cigars. The size reviewed today is the Robusto. This cigar is made up of a bright Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper followed by a Habano binder and blend of Dominican, Nicarguan and American fillers. This is a mild to medium bodied smoke that retails around $9.50.
President of Casa Cuevas Cigars, Luis Cuevas Jr. stated: “The Cuevas Reserva for my father was supposed to be the Cuevas signature brand back well over a decade ago. As with all things in life, plans always change. I am proud to have worked closely with my father and my son Alec Cuevas, who is now part of the family business recreating this blend. I am ecstatic that this brand has come full circle, as we can now present it as a family project to the consumer.”
The Cuevas Reserva’s are beautifully packaged in vintage Cuban style 20 count boxes.
Both blends are initially released in three vitolas with more to follow in the future.
6X50 Toro $9.90 $10.90
61/4 X 52 Torpedo $10.40 $11.40
5×52 Robusto $9.50 $10.50
This Cuevas Reserva Natural has a beautifully bright walnut colored wrapper with a silky feel to the touch. This stick has few tiny veins and some visible yet tight seams. Aromas of Cedar radiate from the wrapper. We utilized the straight cut for this review, which then produced cedar and wood notes on the cold draw.
First third – Earth, spice and vanilla all kick this off with a nice citrus light peppery twist on the finish. The vanilla spice really accentuate put through the third here and earth notes move rich to the finish. Beautiful start. The ash holds through the third with the burn slightly wavy. The body is a solid medium here.
Second Third – The vanilla spice notes continue into this third along with that nice earthy note on the finish. Consistent great distinct flavor in this blend that reminds me of a perfectly paired meal with a fine wine. The ash falls at the midpoint and burn turns sharp. The body lightens up a bit to the mild to medium range.
Final Third – The final third keeps all the same flavors in the profile and adds a nice nutty nuance to please the palate. The burn remains sharp and body mild to medium.
Bourbon – Makers Mark Private Barrel Select
Scotch – Balvenie 12 Year Double Wood
Wine – Decoy Zinfandel
This Cuevas Reserva Natural is a great easy smoke that a beginner and aficionado can enjoy. Vanilla, spice, earth and nutty notes all blended into one delightful smoke experience really hits the spot. This is the perfect cigar for a slow Sunday morning on a warm spring day when you don’t want a lot of power, but still want to get your cigar fix and peace of mind. I would recommend picking one of these up to try.
