Cuevas Reserva Maduro – Cigar Review

Cuevas Reserva Maduro

This Cuevas Reserva Maduro is made by Casa Cuevas Cigars. The size reviewed today is the Robusto. This cigar is made up of a beautiful Mexican San Andreas wrapper followed by a Dominican Piloto binder and blend of Dominican and Nicarguan fillers. This is a medium plus to full bodied smoke that retails around $10.50.

President of Casa Cuevas Cigars, Luis Cuevas Jr. stated: “The Cuevas Reserva for my father was supposed to be the Cuevas signature brand back well over a decade ago. As with all things in life, plans always change. I am proud to have worked closely with my father and my son Alec Cuevas, who is now part of the family business recreating this blend.  I am ecstatic that this brand has come full circle, as we can now present it as a family project to the consumer.”

The Cuevas Reserva’s are beautifully packaged in vintage Cuban style 20 count boxes.

Both blends are initially released in three vitolas with more to follow in the future.

Vitolas:

6X50         Toro             $9.90              $10.90

61/4 X 52 Torpedo     $10.40            $11.40

5×52          Robusto     $9.50              $10.50

Pre-Light:

This Cuevas Reserva Maduro has a beautifully rich dark chocolate colored wrapper with a velvety feel. This stick has few tiny veins and some visible yet tight seams. Aromas of Mesquite Wood radiate from the wrapper. We utilized the straight cut for this review, which then produced cedar and raisin notes on the cold draw.

After Toast:

First third – A smoked wood note followed by some cocoa and baked like fruits. A really eccentric start to this stick. Some cedar like components enter on the finish as well. Half way through the third some nice oily notes enter the fold. The burn is slightly wavy and ash holds through the third.

Second Third – Wood and a nice cinnamon baking spice comes into play here with the fruit notes subsiding to the finish. The ash fell at the mid point and burn remains slightly wavy.

Final Third – Wood and spice mix nicely in this third to give a great smoke experience a grand finale. The fruit notes still linger on the finish in a dessert like manner making one wish this smoke didn’t have to end! Burn remains slightly wavy.

Suggested Pairing:

Bourbon – Bulliet

Beer -Yuengling Black and Tan

Overall Experience:

This Cuevas Reserva Maduro is a phenomenal smoke that hits the spot on a warm winter day here in Pennsylvania. The blend of wood, spice, cocoa and fruit with a full bodied smoke experience really make for a real treat. I would say this is a very good cigar for the price point and would recommend anyone give it a shot if you come across at your shop!
