Cigar Review: The Wise Man Maduro

Basic Information:

Name – The Wise Man Maduro

Producer – Foundation Cigars Company

Size – Toro

Wrapper – Mexican San Andreas

Tobacco Blend –  Nicaragua

Pricing – $10.76

Body – Medium +

Construction/Appearance:

This cigar is dark chocolate in color with minimal veins and some slightly raised seams. The cigar is box pressed as well.

Pre-Light:

Aroma – Hickory and Barnyard

Type of Cut – Straight

Cold Draw – Cedar and Hazelnut

After Toast:

First Third – Initial notes of pepper, cedar and coffee hit the palate with great balance. Few minutes into the smoke, flavors are extremely consistent, but the coffee has now developed into a really tasty espresso note. Burn was slightly jagged and ash held strong.

Second Third – The cedar and espresso really take the stage here and is pretty pronounced on the palate. The flavor profile is rich in this third. The burn turned sharp. The ash fell at the halfway point.

Final Third – This cigar is still consistent with cedar and espresso as the key notes. A nice nutty flavor finishes this cigar. Love the flavors as they are right in my wheelhouse. Burn remained sharp.

Suggested Pairing:

Scotch – Johnny Walker Black

Wine – Fire Road Sauvignon Blanc

Overall Experience:

This cigar was another fine Nicaraguan treat! The pepper with espresso, cedar and nuts make this a great flavor bomb. Not real complex, but awesome stick. I said it once before and I’ll say it again, I think this brand is up and coming and heading in the right direction. I picked this up at a viewing party at Prime Cigar in Miami for the movie Handrolled. Foundation cigars sponsored the event so I tried them in support and will now be a customer.
