Cigar Review: Gurkha Avenger G5

Basic Information: Gurkha Avenger G5

Manufacturer – Gurkha Cigars

Size – Toro

Wrapper – Connecticut Maduro

Tobacco Blend – Nicaragua

Pricing – $6.00

Body – Medium +

This Gurkha Avenger G5 is a dark brown espresso like colored cigar that is box pressed with a great oily shine to it. There are a few visible veins and invisible seams.

Aroma – Smoked Wood – Hickory like. Meaty.

Type of Cut – Straight

Cold Draw – Cedar and Prune

After Toast:

First Third – Wood espresso and cinnamon spice hit the palate at the beginning of this stick. Some cocoa notes come forth a few minutes in as well.. The burn is wavy and ash holds through the third.

Second Third – Espresso, wood and cinnamon spice take the stage again in this third with a cedar like note mixed in on the finish. A kind of not so nice oily note comes through and really kind of ruins the third experience that was off to a good start. The burn remains wavy and ash fell at the 2.25 inch mark.

Final Third – Wood and spice continue here alone with some hickory smoked like notes on the finish making the palate salivate for grilled meats! The rough oil notes are intermittent which really takes away from the great hickory smoked component here.

Suggested Pairing:

Whiskey – Gentleman Jack

Wine – Decoy Pinot Noir

Overall Experience:

This Gurkha Avenger G5 started off well and pretty consistent from a flavor profile until after the mid way point where it must have hit oil blotches and really ruined the experience. Those notes were strong and gassy and really turned off the entire experience. The hickory notes were a pleasant surprise, but this one was a mixed bag in terms of when that oily mess of a note was going to show back up. I’d pass on this cigar.
