Caldwell Midnight Express – Cigar Review

Caldwell Midnight Express

This is a cigar review of the Caldwell Midnight Express by the Caldwell Cigar Company. The size chosen for this review is the robusto. This is composed of an Ecuadorian Connecticut shade hybrid wrapper followed by Dominican fillers and binder. This is a medium plus bodied smoke that retails for around $10.60.

Construction/Appearance:

This Caldwell Midnight Express is a nice cocoa colored smoke with some nice lighter milk chocolate marbling on the wrapper. This smoke has very fine veins and damn near invisible seams. It is double banded, the first being the normal Eastern Standard band only blacked out with gold. The second being on the foot in a beige with black font labeling the cigar the Midnight Express.

Pre-Light:

Aromas of cedar, spice, nuts and sweet chocolate all radiate from various points of the wrapper and foot of the cigar. The cut we are using is the Colibri V Cut. The cold draw produces notes of chocolate, cedar and raisins.

After Toast:

First third – This smoke starts off with a really luscious chocolate note followed by cedar and spice. Dark roast espresso notes come into play towards the end of this third. This is a medium plus bodied smoke. The ash holds through the third and burn is slightly wavy.

Second Third – The dark espresso notes with spice really amp up in this third. A leathery note is introduced on the finish, which is a really thick hearty note. At the midway point those cocoa / dark chocolate notes come back into the story. The body remains medium plus, burn wavy and ash falls at the halfway point.

Final Third – The espresso notes with spice hold firm here with the cocoa and leather still present but on the finish of the smoke. The burn remains wavy and body remains medium plus.

Suggested Pairing:

Wine – Emmolo Merlot

Bourbon – Knob Creek Single Barrel

Overall Experience:

This Caldwell Midnight Express is a phenomenal smoke from start to finish. The consistency of the body to the robust flavor profile really makes this one stand out and may be my new favorite of their line. Absolutely love the espresso and leather components and how they structured the experience with a one two punch. I would definitely recommend this one to those of you trying to figure out which of these Caldwell Collection smokes to try next.

Fun Facts:

This cigar was introduced at the 2016 IPCPR trade show as a follow up to the 2014 release the Eastern Standard. These come in a few other sizes 6×50, 5×50 and 6×52. They are priced at 13.80, 11.20 and 12.60 respectively. This cigar is a spin off of the 2015 limited release called The Last Tsar, which they apparently used the same wrapper which is Arapiraca Maduro.
